This is a conceptual model of the proposed Gold Star Mothers Monument. It is intended to show some elements that are essential and others that are just decoration at this point. I use it to improve my visualization of the project.
The central point of the model is the grief stricken Gold Star Mother statue. I wanted her to be linked to real people for the public to associate with the real world. So on the granite arcs I've placed bronze relief sculptures of the faces of actual Gold Star Mothers facing their fallen sons and daughters. I'm collecting information from all across the United States for the faces to be placed in the Monument. There will be prominent Gold Star Mothers, sons and daughters from Iraq, USS Cole, Beirut Barracks, two First Ladies and their sons. The Sullivan brothers. The first Native American woman, the only Nurse in Vietnam, Chuck Norris’ brother and mother. I hope to include famous battlefield casualties from Pork Chop Hill, Bastogne, Okinawa, Pearl Harbor, LX X-ray Hue, Tet, Choson Reservoir, and Baghdad. These names will evoke familiar images in the mind of the visitor as well as be visually interesting. The faces will surround the statue of the grieving Mother and will appear to look upon it.
Pillars and kiosks will educate the public of freedom’s sacrifice and the loss suffered by the Mothers who have gone on to give back to the Veterans and their community. Poetry and important documents will all testify to the Great Women of the Gold Star and their organization's history. |
